A note about our wines at The Crouchers

You may well notice that many of the wines on our list are produced organically or naturally and I thought I really should explain a bit about why we think that such things are important.

The first, and in many ways the only reason why these wines make such a regular appearance on our wine list is very plain and simple, quality. In an organic vineyard the winemaker actively encourages other plants to grow meaning that the vines are forced to compete with other naturally occurring flora for the nutrients in the soil. This means that the roots of the vine have no choice but to burrow deeper into the ground than their competition, and it is here that the best minerals and nutrients are found. The end result being far healthier vines which in turn of course leads to tastier grapes !

Organic wine farm France

Organic wine farm France

Aside from a far higher quality raw ingredient there are still more qualitative benefits to organic wine making. The lack of artificial anything means that the wines are a million miles away from the generic wine that is becoming all too common. They are allowed to take on something of the nature of the soil and climate in which the grapes are grown, meaning that they are genuinely representative of the area (or Terroir ) in which they are grown and as such become uniquely individual.

The only real down side to making wine organically is the amount of extra work that the winemaker loads himself with. But for us, the end user, even this is an upside ! He is hardly likely to put so much effort into growing his grapes to skimp when it comes to actually making the wine. Generally small, artisan growers such as the ones we work with are absolutely fastidious in the winery, combining the most traditional of techniques with the most up to date of technology to produce genuine, authentic wine.

Something I haven’t even touched on yet is a very hot topic among many. That is sulphur, the very thing that is responsible for that morning after the night before sore head as well as many other detrimental effects. By law wine certified as organic can only contain less that two thirds of the sulphur that is allowed in conventional wine, and many are far far lower even that this. No bad thing for any of us !

Chateau la Blanquerie

Chateau la Blanquerie

Lastly and certainly not least are the advantages that farming organically has on our environment. Gone are all the nasty fertilizers and pesticides and the damage that they do. On top of this farming naturally encourages the plants and wildlife that inhabit a region to flourish within the ecosystem, something that has to be good when compared to the ravages that chemical pesticides can cause to our natural landscape.

All that said, the ultimate test is what you think of the wine, so pop by and let us know what you think !

A Word from the Chichester Wedding Planner – Wedding Presents

Did you know that few couples start married life from scratch and most newlywed couples  will own at least one set of crockery.   At one time guests used to bring the present to the wedding  and more often than not couples would sometimes end up with 2 or 3 of the same thing.

Chichester Wedding Venue at The Crouchers

Chichester Wedding Venue at The Crouchers

Now days  there are many companies that allow you to have a list on their website so that your guests can buy you something that you actually want.   The other good idea is to request  vouchers towards the honeymoon or even tickets for an event such as a show, concert  or something wild like maybe a parachute jump and these could be spread over the year and give you something special to look forward to.

There is also a growing trend to request a cash gift to enable you to get those large gifts.   Another great idea is for vouchers for a nice hotel that maybe you could use to celebrate your first wedding anniversary.    All this takes time I know but it is worth planning so that you have lots of lovely gifts and things to look forward to.  We would be very happy to issue Gift Vouchers should any of your guests wish to purchase one.

Goodwood Racing Revolutions

Goodwood, Chichester. As we approach the 2011 Summer details of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed are emerging, with the chosen theme this year of  ”Racing Revolutions – Quantum leaps that shaped motorsport”, that will focus on the machines that revolutionised racing, from four-wheel drive in rallying to mid-engined single-seaters and turbocharged engines.

Special displays will celebrate 50 years of the Jaguar E-type’s first public appearance, as well as the 60th anniversary of Jaguar’s first win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, when its C-Type racer was driven to victory by Peter Walker and Peter Whitehead, with Jaguar being the official brand sponsor.

The centenary of the Indy 500 will be another theme at Goodwood this year. Previous winners including Bobby Unser, Johnny Rutherford and Arie Luyendyk will all be in attendance, as Goodwood hosts the biggest celebration of the famous race outside of its home country.

When it comes to the world of Formula One, Goodwood’s aim for 2011 is to beat its record of eight teams in attendance. So far Red Bull, McLaren and Williams have signed up and will be running up the famous hillclimb. Goodwood House

The world of rallying will be represented both by the sport’s latest cars, including the MINI Countryman WRC and Ken Block in his Ford Fiesta rally car, and famous models from the Group B era. Also at the 2011 Festival, Touring car drivers including Paul Radisich and Anthony Reid will be on hand to mark the 20th anniversary of the Super Touring class.

For motorcycling enthusiasts at Goodwood there will be a focus on 100 years of the Mountain Course on the Isle of Man TT, plus a number of teams and leading riders from the World Superbike championship will be heading up the hill, including James Toseland and Leon Haslam.

The Goodwood Motor Show and Festival of Speed runs from June 30-July 3.

If travelling down to Chichester for the weekend or for a holiday break, check out The Crouchers Country Hotel, a popular Goodwood Hotel conveniently located between West Wittering beach and Goodwood, an ideal location for enjoying that summer drive to and from the track and the beach.

For more information and to book your tickets visit the Goodwood Festival of Speed website.

Chichester Festival Theatre 2011

Chichester Festival Theatre, Chichester, West Sussex. The Chichester Festival Theatre programme for 2011 looks like one of the best yet with a whole range of great performances on the cards. Whether you are visiting the area for the day or staying over in a Chichester Hotel, the Chichester Theatre is a great time out for everyone.

Just two of the showings this year…

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead – 20th May to 11th June

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead Chichester Festival

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead Chichester Festival

In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, a verbally scintillating and richly inventive play, Stoppard retells Hamlet through the eyes of two of its minor characters. Vaguely conscious that they are bit parts in a much bigger story of which they have no direct knowledge, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern hilariously and poignantly inhabit a world completely beyond their grasp.

Are we humans, like these hapless protagonists, swept along by random events, or are we inescapably part of a script which has already been written?

Singin’ in the Rain – 27th June to 10th September

Singin' in the Rain Chichester Festival Theatre

Singin' in the Rain Chichester Festival Theatre

Don Lockwood is a silent movies star with everything he could want – fame, adulation and even a well-publicised ‘romance’ with his co-star Lina Lamont. But Hollywood is about to change forever. There is rumour in the studio of a new kind of film, where the actors actually talk… and sing… and dance.

Singin’ in the Rain is the story of that first Hollywood musical, the moment when the silver screen found its voice and never looked back. With all the sparkle and spectacle of a golden age, it features a glorious score including Make ‘em Laugh, Good Morning, Moses Supposes and, of course, Singin’ in the Rain.

For a dinner night out before the Chichester Theatre or for a great lunch visit the nearby Chichester Restaurants at the Crouchers Country Hotel and Restaurant.
